Vila Flor, Portugal

We propose to preserve the identity of the existing building by rehabilitating the spaces, transforming the house into an exhibition element while meeting the requested program. The exterior configuration of the existing structure is fully maintained. However, the small size of the rooms limits both the exhibition setup and the experience of the spaces. Therefore, we propose removing some of the existing first-floor walls to create a more fluid, dynamic space. Inspired by Lars Von Trier’s film Dogville, we preserve a “fingerprint” of the past by marking the floor with its memory.

On the new plot, the building adopts a contemporary language with references to vernacular architecture. Small and large volumes reinterpret traditional houses (four walls with hipped roofs), connecting to form a unified element. These structures, like chimneys, receive zenithal light and serve as both architectural features and sustainable tools. The ensemble, composed of two complementary elements, preserves the existing building’s history while creating bright, adaptable spaces that blend past and present.
