Blue Celling Apartment

Ajuda, Portugal

There are homes that ask for silence. That call us not to transform, but to listen.

This small apartment in Lisbon, dating from the 1950s–60s, carried a clear memory — a well-defined typology, a distinct aesthetic, a very specific way of living. Here, rehabilitation was not about cutting through the past, but about respecting it. We preserved the structure, the rhythm, the truth of its time. And where preservation was no longer possible, we designed with the same restraint.

The intervention was surgical.

In the kitchen, where no original material could be recovered, we created a space that is timeless, discreet, almost silent.
Light surfaces, textured white tile, natural wood, a simple and restrained design — choices that do not impose themselves, leaving room for time and for those who live there. The merging of compartments and the extension towards the former enclosed balcony restore continuity and allow the space to breathe with lightness. The cabinetry — clear, essential — is conceived to be appropriated, used, lived in. Life will give it nuance.

In the bathroom, minimal in size, the challenge was to create more than what seemed possible. The redesign allowed for a more generous layout: two atmospheres within a single space. A discreet wall conceals the shower; the blue floor, in small hexagonal tiles, rises subtly towards the ceiling, forming a parallel plane that expands and surprises.

The entire intervention stemmed from one essential premise: not to distort memory, but simply to continue the story. A restrained, precise and delicate project.

A home that remains faithful to what it has always been — now with renewed clarity, a new sense of breathing, and a new way of welcoming the present.
